Cottondollz Cattery

Cuddly Cotton Dollface Persians

                             PKD

What is PKD?

Polycystic Kidney Disease or
PKD is an inherited autosomal
dominant disease of the kidneys in cats. Cysts are formed on the kidneys which can lead to renal failure and death later in life. Kidney cysts can be present before 12 months of age, however renal failure usually occurs at a later age. Therefore, PKD is considered a late onset renal disease and even though it can occure in any breed of cat, it is estimated that over 37% of Persians have PKD.

How is PKD Inherited?

It is an autosomal inherited disease. So, for PKD to be present, one copy of the gene must be inherited from either one or both parents for the kitten to be positive.

How do you test for PKD?

Until recently, the only way to test for PKD was through ultrasound. This test relies on the accuracy and knowledge of the technicians performing them. As of January 2005, there is a simple DNA test available. This test identifies the gene that causes PKD which allows breeders to ensure they only use PKD negative cats for breeding.

Do all cats that have the gene die from PKD?

No. Research shows that most cats do go on to live happy, healthy lives and can die of natural causes or other feline disease instead.

How does Cottondollz Cattery eliminate PKD?

Cottondollz Cattery uses breeders that have been DNA tested negative through UC Davis in California and are PKD NEGATIVE ONLY! Any new breeders brought in will also be tested. This ensures that every kitten Cottondollz Cattery produces will be PKD negative!
